Wireless Camera Evaluation

UPDATED ON 21/07/2023 – Please see section “Latest Update”

As per the KEROA presentation on Tuesday the the 16th of May, we mentioned that one of the suppliers we have been in contact with to quote us on phase 1 of the camera network rollout, Sky High Africa, has offered to set up 1 pole for us to test with to determine whether a completely wireless solution is feasible in our area.

The reason for us testing this solution is that while there is fiber in the area for residential use, there is unfortunately a lack of extra fiber infrastructure specifically for the use of street cameras. Because it is solar powered, this setup also does not require Eskom power to function.

The pole, which would look similar to the one in the picture below, will have the following items on it:

1 x Solar panel

1 x Secure, lockable box

1 x Lithium battery (inside the box)

1 x 4G router (inside the box)

3 x Hikvision cameras

Cabling and other items (inside the box)

The plan is to test this in our area for a period of 3 months which will give us the following results:

  • How much data is used per month.
  • Whether the solar panel and battery solution is able to power the cameras for extended periods of time.
  • Whether the data connection in the area performs well.

The overall cost of this complete setup is R36 000.00.

While the test is taking place, various CPF members will be set up to receive notification and alerts from the cameras, who can then respond in case of an emergency. The complete setup will also be insured so that in the case of any items being damaged or stolen, we can fully recover the costs.

The offer from the supplier is that if, after 3 months, we find that the setup does not meet our requirements, the items will be purchased back from KEROA. Alternatively, we can keep the items and use it for a different purpose at a later stage.

We believe that this is an excellent offer and well worth exploring.

Therefore, we would like to ask you, the KEROA members, to contribute to this project. You can do so by making a deposit into the KEROA bank account and using the reference “camera”. The money collected using this reference will be ringfenced and only used for the purchase of the required equipment. Once the required amount has been collected, we will update this page to indicate that.

Latest Update

We are very close to reaching the amount required to purchase the first camera pole. We urge all KEROA (and non KEROA members living in Kyalami AH Ext 1) who have not made contributions yet to contribute funds so that we can get this up and running as soon as possible.

The first camera pole will be placed on the intersection of Maple and Rose road. This is to ensure that we cover an entry point into the area and we believe it will also help reduce crime in that area since most of the incidents this year has been along Maple road between Cactus and Rose.
