KEROA Crime Update – January 2024

Welcome to the first crime report for 2024 where we provide you with an update of what security related incidents have occurred in the area.

January is typically a month where we have a high number of crimes reported since most people are back in Johannesburg.

Overall, we received no reports from residents of any crimes in the area, however SAPS recorded a total of 5 incidents for the area. Very often this is because the crimes did not affect a resident living in the area, and therefore they would not have reported this on any of the local security groups on WhatsApp or to their residents association.

Out of the 5 crimes reported to SAPS, 2 of them occurred in Rose road, but we do not have the precise location and cannot confirm if they actually occurred in Kyalami AH Ext 1 or more towards Riversands or towards Bridal Pass. We will therefore not include these two incidents in our records.

The only crime that we were made aware of via a security company occurred at Beaulieu College were a vehicle was stolen.

KEROA would like to implement more street cameras in the area. If you would like to help contribute funds to the camera project, it would be greatly appreciated. Not only would this benefit you but everyone else in the area. Together we can make a difference.

Please ensure that your alarm systems have some form of alternative power supply, such as solar power.

If you have solar panels, ensure that they are securely installed and cannot easily be removed. If possible, try and install a sensor to trigger your alarm system in case they are being tampered with.

Test your electric fence regularly to ensure that it is working correctly. If you need to replace the lead acid battery, replace it with a lithium battery instead as they will last a lot longer. (The same applies for your gate and garage door motors.)

Ensure that there is no grass or branches touching the wires of your fence, as this could cause a short or reduce the effectiveness of the fence. Criminals are also placing small metal wires over the fence in order to cause a short. These wires are often missed when a check is done, and the property owner will simply switch of the alarm. This then gives the criminals the opportunity to enter without raising suspicion.

Lastly, try and remove as much of the litter outside of your property as possible on a regular basis. It not only helps to keep the area looking neat and tidy, but it also shows that people are more alert and aware of their surroundings, making it less likely for criminals to target.

Kind regards,

KEROA Safety and Security
